SCOTLAND 2011

St. Andrews was the venue for this years Dick Do's Scotland trip with an expanded group of sixteen intrepid golfers raring to go. After the long, but surprisingly quick journey (with the exception of the McIlroy/Pearson duo who decided on the scenic route over the Tay Bridge), everyone arrived safely at Scotscraig Golf Club for the first match. The teams were essentially the same as the previous year with the addition of Phil Rushbrook and Dave Hogg on Martin McCarney's side, and Fred Pearson, Alastair McIlroy and late substitute Hugh Jackson on John Dunlop's side. As the losers from 2011, the Dunlop team had the "honour" of wearing the "See You Jimmy Hats" on the first tee and it was clear from the forced smiles, they were determined not to wear them again. A tightly contested first day resulted in two wins for each team - game on.

Day two and the venue is the stunning Ladybank Golf Club and with less points on day one, team Dunlop again don the dreaded "See You Jimmy" headwear. In near perfect conditions and playing on immaculate fairways and greens, team Dunlop take the spoils 3 to 1.

Wednesday is DickDo's day when the format returns to teams of four and a short drive to St. Andrews Links clubhouse for a drink but not much shopping - £100 for a St.Andrews golf shirt! After watching a particularly entertaining warm-up on the first tee of the New Course, the teams set off on the Jubilee Course in a howling gale. In almost impossible conditions, with balls rolling inches from the hole to yards off the green, an incredible 58 points wins the day.

Day four and on to the Crail Golfing Society - the 7th oldest golf club in the world. A challenging course laid out by the master himself, Old Tom Morris. With shots over rocky bays and the wind ever changing, team Dunlop win two and half to one and a half. A bad day for team McCarney who now trail by three shots going into the final day.

"I could putt better than that"

Friday and, with the scars of battle (mostly in the evenings) taking their toll, the teams move south of the border - only just though. Goswick Links on the coast near Berwick upon Tweed is the final venue but with a twist. Hugh Jackson has a previously arranged golf trip to meet up with and is unable to play. Despite many calls for a last minute substitute, team Dunlop have to field a one man team and, after a healthy debate the previous evening, Tim Metcalfe is chosen to play first on his own, but with an additional three shots, against probably team McCarney's strongest player Matt Pearson and father Phil. The task in front of Tim is daunting to say the least. However, despite every effort, team McCarney cannot quite bring home the required points and team Dunlop earn a well deserved victory.
