THE DICK-DOS

There are several diverse groups within the playing membership most having variations in their type of competitions as well as the administration of the individual handicaps.

These include the Seniors, the Fiddle, The Wags, the Winge-ers and the Dick-Dos.

How these sections acquired their names is a matter of conjecture, what is known is the Dick-Dos was formed in South Carolina by a party of Yorkshire sporting friends including Wetherby members, eventually basing themselves here on a Wednesday afternoon.

Now with a regular base of around 20 committed logo shirted golfers, guests are welcome, also any other member in the club who is prepared to play in the weekly team competitions and also take part in the social ambience after the game.

There's the background, now to this week's amazing report on Wednesday's team competition.

Ideally it is teams of four, an odd number turning up requires team number adjustment, so the format was two 3-balls and three 4-balls, two to score off three quarter handicap, the three balls getting an allowance of two points if two of the team fail to make par.

The four man team of John Davis (4), Wayne Greenwood (8), Phil Rushbrook (15) and Keith Hughes (15) basked on the terrace, not only in sunshine but with the total conviction they had 'scooped the pool' with a points score of 89, 44 for the front 9 and 45 on the back.

John Davis scored an unbelievable two at the par-4 4th hole (net albatross) followed by a par net birdie from Wayne to accumulate 8 points on that hole. Playing mainly par golf or better John also made eagle at the par-5 12th, while Wayne scored a best ever round of 2 under par gross, they felt quite confident!

But as so often happens in the story books, the last card in casually slipped to the organizer Chris Leggott was a stunner. He banged the table called for silence, stood and announced the winning score for the day was not 89 points, but 94 points, 49 out and 45 back.

The victorious team of John Hamilton (16), Dave Balmforth (15) plus two 83 year olds Bill Bentley and John Lelean, all played their part with the two Johns doing most of the scoring going out (Hamilton level par gross!!!) and Bill and Dave coming home. The previously confident team on 89 points nearly choked on their beer and had to take a severe dose of humble pie for their previous confidence and being beaten by a pair of octogenarians!!!
